Barbwire – Industrial strength firewall that could either drop a packet either reject a request.
Filter – DROP, LOG, ACCEPT or REJECT packets without problems as in the other tables. There are three chain built in to this table.
The first one is named FORWARD and is used on all non-locally generated packets that are not destined for our localhost (the firewall, in other words).
INPUT is used on all packets that are destined for our local host (the firewall) and OUTPUT is finally used for all locally generated packets.
Nat – The nat table is used mainly for Network Address Translation. . The PREROUTING chain is used to alter packets as soon as they get in to the firewall.
The OUTPUT chain is used for altering locally generated packets (ie, on the firewall) before they get to the routing decision.
Finally we have the POSTROUTING chain which is used to alter packets just as they are about to leave the firewall.
Mangle- This table is used mainly for mangling packets. We could change different packets and how their headers look among other things. The table consists of two built in chains, the PREROUTING and OUTPUT chains.
PREROUTING is used for altering packets just as they enter the firewall and before they hit the routing decision. OUTPUT is used for changing and altering locally generated packets before they enter the routing decision. Note that mangle can not be used for any kind of Network Address Translation or Masquerading, the nat table was made for these kinds of operations.
Here is an example of what can be done with barbwire.
For instance, 24.226.215.66 pings(ICMP) 24.226.215.67, you have two options that you can do on the firewall.
Either you configure it to DROP that packet, which in this case no message will be returned to the requester or you can REJECT the request, which in this case the requester will have a network unreachable response. In both of the cases above, the request will do only one hop.

Based on the firewall kernel the best way to use this table is to use it with the nat table. The same is true for mangle. That is the only way that they will work effectively.
Nat Table Description:
The best way to use the nat table is to use it in conjunction with barbwire. You will need to create an entry in the nat table for each machine that you want to be able to reach.
In other words, if you want to forward or masquerade the IP address of 192.168.2.1 to 192.168.2.2, then you will need two entries in the nat table, the first being 192.168.2.1/32 and the second being 192.168.2.2/32. You might also have to set up port forwarding to forward ICMP echo requests from 192.168.2.1 to 192.168.2.2.
The main difference between barbwire and nat is that barbwire has the built in ability to change the packet just as it hits the firewall. You can do this with barbwire and nat.. At the same time you can change the packet just as it leaves the firewall with nat. barbwire can only change a packet once.
However, barbwire cannot be used to select a specific protocol or protocol family. With barbwire you can only alter the packet as a whole (and not within a protocol family).
With nat you can alter the protocol within a protocol family as if it was built in to the protocol. In other words, if you want to alter SSH protocol traffic, you will need to create an entry in the nat table. This entry will allow you to do such things as Masquerade, Forward IP traffic and Port Forwarding with the sshd protocol.

This attack is where a network element (a web server, for example) accepts packet requests that have an associated IP address. The IP address is not a valid one and the web server believes that it is really a valid IP address.
The maliciousness of the attacker using this method is that the web server doesn’t respond to the request and the attacker can read all traffic sent to that IP address.
The attack is more common with SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) but could be used to steal all information from any server the malicious IP address is connected to. For example, with SMTP the attacker could use the following command:

What’s New in the?
Barbwire is an industrial strength firewall that could either drop a packet either reject a request. It is limited to INPUT, OUTPUT, FORWARD, NAT, PREROUTING, POSTROUTING and MANGLE tables. More information about the table can be found at the Dr. Barbed Wire Wiki page. A daemon to run this script is required. It is called barbwire. Additionally the kernel has to be compiled with support for DROP. If you are not sure how to do that, visit the Kernel Configuration on the wiki page. This script will install libvirt as the backend.
To configure this script for instance you can do it in a way like the following. You can read about all the available options on the wiki page.
./install_barbwire.sh -i /opt/Barbwire -n firewalld -d /var/lib/barbwire -f

As this is the first script of this kind, most of the options are not documented in the read me file. If you need help, feel free to post questions in the comments.
Using Barbwire-
Install the daemon
./install_barbwire.sh
Start the daemon.
/etc/init.d/barbwire start
or /etc/init.d/barbwire start
Note that installing barbwire can be done using apt-get. Simply type in the following.
apt-get install barbwire
After that, the daemon will start upon reboot.
Start the firewall.
/etc/init.d/firewalld start
or /etc/init.d/firewalld start
Check it out with the help of help_barbwire.sh.
/opt/barbwire/help_barbwire.sh
Remember that the daemon uses a control socket for reading configuration files. This can be checked by the following
sudo netstat -nlp | grep barbwire
Note that you should have the correct permission to access the socket.
To stop the daemon, just use the following command.
/etc/init.d/barbwire stop
