If you’re reading this article from a computer or smartphone (and you most certainly are) then you should probably take a moment and thank the Universe for the existence of semiconductors. First envisioned in the 19th century and developed throughout the 20th, this technology is fundamental to the existence of the computer and most of today’s advanced electronic devices.
If you’re fascinated with the way these materials work and how they can be used to create various electronic components, then you might also be curious about an application called (what else but) Semiconductors.
An animated educational application
Animated using Java, this simple program is an educational application designed to help physics teachers worldwide. If you have no prior knowledge of semiconductors, you probably won’t learn much from using this app by yourself. But paired with a good teacher, Semiconductors could be used to make an arguably boring physics class more interesting.
I’ll be the first to admit that physics isn’t my strength, but I’ll do my best to describe what goes on in the application’s interface. Now, semiconductors are basically materials that have the properties of both conductors and insulators; this gives electrical engineers very precise control over the current flowing through a system.
A closer look at how semiconductors work
In order to give materials such as silicone their conductive properties, some other elements are added in order to change the atomic configuration of the original element. This process is called “doping”, while the impurities added are called “dopants”, which can be either n-type or p-type.
In this simulation, you get to add dopants to the semiconductors, adjust the voltage and watch how electrons behave in what is essentially a diode. Unfortunately, this is as far as my knowledge allows me to go with the explanation, but I’m sure that a physics teacher could do way better with Semiconductors.

Adding dopants to a semiconductor sets it apart from most other materials. The resulting compound is a type of semiconductor whose electrical properties lie somewhere in between a conductor and an insulator.
An imperfect semiconductor is where a material is a good conductor, but with some of its electrons moving around like a certain type of gas. This phenomenon prevents the power from being fully passed on. A perfect semiconductor has no movement at all.
Known Applications of Semiconductors
Aside from the obvious (convert the current from a battery into a light bulb), semiconductors are used in nearly every electronic device and they hold a crucial position in the information age.

High-frequency transistors
The reason why they’re so important is that a transistor is nothing more than a piece of silicon with a metal electrode glued on top. Adding dopants ensures that the semiconductor has the electrical properties of a diode, or basically a one way valve. As long as the transistor has something attached on top of its surface, it provides a way of controlling the current flowing through it. A power source can be used to bias the transistor and turn it on and off, and the currents passing through it can be controlled as well.
All of this results in different kinds of transistors, where one would have properties that would allow it to pass high voltage (power transistors) and others that would allow them to control the current more precisely (miniaturized transistors).
Aside from being a simple way of controlling the current in a circuit, transistors allow electronic engineers to create circuits at a very small scale. It’s the main reason why integrated circuits have become as commonplace as they are today.
MOSFET
In 1949, the MOS field-effect transistor (MOSFET) was invented. This was the first successful attempt at creating a transistor with on/off controls and structural integration. The MOSFET has been used in almost all digital and analog devices since, and they’ve been in the process of replacing conventional transistors all the way up to low-current applications.

You start by adding a semiconductor symbol to your board with the cursor.
A list of available dopants will appear on screen.
You can click on an element in the list to add it to your circuit.
When you click on the “Add” button, the selected element is added to the circuit, its ground pin is set to zero volts and the input voltage is set to the voltage desired for the experiment.
A voltage will appear on the “Voltage” pin to indicate the voltage on the circuit and the dopant’s ground pin will be set to 1.
The input pin of the circuit will be set to the voltage desired and the anode pin will be set to ground.
You can use the “Reset” button to get your circuit back to the initial state.
The simulation will run for approximately 3 seconds, during which time you can modify the voltage, but the input voltage will remain constant.
Once you’re done, the entire simulation will stop and the screen will get cleared, leaving only a new, clean circuit for you to do it again.

A diode is an electronic device that behaves like an open switch in one direction and like a closed switch in the other. The diode consists of two materials that have different electrical conductances.
In practice, diodes are usually semiconductor crystals that have been grown with an impurity atom or ion (typically boron) to give them a relatively high electrical conductivity.
The result is that, on one side of the diode, electrons will be easily able to cross through the semiconductor material, whereas on the other side of the diode, these electrons will hardly be able to cross.

Semiconductors are classified as conductors or insulators depending on the type of applied electric field. It is measured by the average speed of flow of charge carriers at the local level.
You can add elements, such as metals, inorganic semiconductors, organic semiconductors, or metals (such as gold or mercury) to a semiconductor to create a material that can be a conductor, an insulator, or a semiconductor, etc.
There are many uses for semiconductors, such as in transistors and diodes.

The good and the bad of semiconductors

This isn’t a feature-packed app, which is why it does make use of very basic graphics and font. That said, the interface is pretty close to a textbook diagram, and you can even save your current configuration in order to recreate it later.

But if you are a pro photographer, there’s a chance you may have also used Photoshop’s powerful selection tool called the “Paintbrush”. Using this tool, you can easily select areas of an image that you want to change, and then replace them with specific colors. For instance, you can take a portion of the image that you want to draw attention, and then color it in specific ways.
Discovering the Paintbrush tool
As you might have guessed, the Paintbrush is part of the “Paint” toolset that you’ll find in Photoshop (it’s the fourth in the top row). Interestingly, the Paintbrush tool does not actually contain any paint, but rather a circular range of pixels. And that’s exactly how it’s named, with its name coming from the fact that it can be used as a paintbrush to select specific areas. The paintbrush’s purpose is to select a user-defined area of pixels (these are usually called “paths”), and then “paint” (or replace) them with specific colors.
