When we last left off, the Vestel 17PW20 was stumbling through the bottom floor of an office building. This building is designed as a multistoried fire proof basement, so Vestel built the 17PW20 with a 1.5 kilowatt High Impedance (H.I.) power supply (PS) rating rather than the usual 2.1 kilowatt output. As a result, the power supply was rated 1.5 kVA @ 33.3 V. For comparison, a typical 1 kVA @ 30 V rating would be 2.1 kVA @ 30 V. Given that the transformer rating was 2,800 VA, the power supply should provide 3.6 kW@ 25 Hz. The input filter should provide roughly 10 kilo-ohms. This is a good quality filter, but I had trouble finding it. I used the old standard¹ 1/2″ 3-position filter. The power supply drops the sine wave of the filter, and the filter output is dropped by only 1/4 of the wave. There was just enough output to have the vestel running. The power supply also uses a curve-shaped internal voltage regulator with a zero-load voltage of 30 V. My power supply runs at about 30 V, so the regulator runs quite hot. The high impedance rating is good for that, but it seems to be a bit low. I suspect the max. load current is 70 W, so the supply would not be good for a heavily-loaded amplifier. I used a 4.1 kVA 60 V/50 Hz transformer to get 3.5 kW@ 50 Hz. This was not good, but it provided enough power to see if it worked. The power supply made some weird noises in the early going. The power supply just goes ‘up’ and ‘down’ during its power-on sequence. This is loud enough to know that the power supply is working. As the power supply runs, there is a weird beep sound.
