A few years later, Drapeau was promoted to Vice President of Products and Technology, and he helped to evolve CAD software from its 1D vector-based roots to its modern 2D DWG roots.

One of the early developments was a “‘smart pencil’ feature that allowed the user to annotate drawings with the optional mouse” (Wikipedia, 2018).

In 1982, Autodesk released the first version of AutoCAD, a desktop CAD software application that could be run on a personal computer with an internal graphics controller. AutoCAD was designed to work with most type of internal graphic display terminals (IGDTs) that were commercially available at that time. It also was available in a version that ran on a Mac System 8 workstation. The DWG format was specifically created for the new product.

In its early days, Autodesk marketed its software through an extensive dealer network, both directly to those who wanted to become dealers and to private companies.

From 1983 to 1985, Autodesk released new versions of AutoCAD (Autodesk, 2018). The first release was a 16-bit version, which was, in those days, a standard method for software applications. In 1984, a 32-bit version, Autodesk 6, was released.

AutoCAD also supports 2D bar charts, XY gauges, XY text, text blocks, 2D sketches, 2D templates, and profiles. The latter are a series of cuts, drilled, or countersunk into the drawing at regularly spaced intervals. Profiles make it easier to find a desired position within a drawing.

The AutoCAD program can be used to create and manipulate both 2D and 3D drawings. 2D models can be created directly on the screen or by importing 2D or 3D model objects. A layer of 3D models can be added to a 2D model.

AutoCAD supports adding other CAD files to a drawing using “buddies”. A “buddy” is a linked file that contains the data needed to edit a model or file; it is used to create a new drawing with a specified data-source.
