The somatostatin receptor 2A (SSTR2A) has been found to be useful as a tumour marker for clear cell renal cell carcinoma (RCC). To determine the potential role of SSTR2A as a marker for clear cell RCC. We evaluated the clinical relevance of SSTR2A in 84 consecutive patients with clear cell RCC. The sensitivity, specificity and positive and negative predictive values of SSTR2A were compared with those of Ca 19.9 and C-reactive protein. None of the patients with benign conditions or other malignant diseases had high levels of SSTR2A. SSTR2A levels were greater than 2.5 pmol/l in 45 patients with clear cell RCC. Clear cell RCC was misdiagnosed as a benign or other malignant disease in 11 patients with high SSTR2A levels. The sensitivity of SSTR2A, Ca 19.9 and C-reactive protein for clear cell RCC was 97.8, 60.7 and 87.5%, respectively. The specificity of SSTR2A for clear cell RCC was 92.7%, which was greater than those of Ca 19.9 and C-reactive protein (75.0 and 86.7%, respectively). The positive predictive value was 95.6%, which was greater than those of Ca 19.9 and C-reactive protein (77.5 and 70.7%, respectively). However, the negative predictive value was only 56.1%, which was less than those of Ca 19.9 and C-reactive protein (91.7 and 90.6%, respectively).
