Drawing and modeling with AutoCAD
In AutoCAD, the program is considered to be a designer’s tool to assist in the creation, editing, and analysis of 2D and 3D drawings and models. In this respect it is considered as a 2D or 3D drafting program. For this reason it is sometimes referred to as a 2D CAD, 3D CAD, 2D drafting, or 3D drafting program.
AutoCAD is used to create 2D drawings, such as architectural floor plans, construction drawings, and blueprints, and to create 3D models of physical objects, such as buildings and architectural structures. The drawings and models produced in AutoCAD can then be used for presentation at design meetings, for ordering custom parts or products from manufacturing companies, and for documenting building construction processes.
Like most CAD programs, the primary purpose of AutoCAD is to assist the drafter (designer) in designing and documenting the geometry (shape) of an object. To design a complex drawing, the drafter will first use the available command menus to define the object’s properties, then create the object. The drawing can then be saved in the drawing format of the drafter’s choice. The drafter may also edit the object using the menus available in the command windows, or using a series of palettes and panels. The drawn object is then exported to other formats (file types) or to other drawing programs, such as other CAD programs, presentation graphics programs, or specialized drawing programs. When using the export command, the original drawing information (geometry) is retained.
In order to create models (3D drawings), the drafter must first import an object into the drawing, and then add and modify geometric objects or “parts” to create the object. A drawing created in this way is called a model drawing. Model drawings can be exported in many file types to other CAD and presentation programs.
Commands
AutoCAD draws 2D and 3D objects using a mouse or keypad to control a pointer cursor and one or more styluses. It also has a special-purpose input device, the tablet. AutoCAD uses a command language that is similar to the commands used in other CAD programs. Commands can be entered into the command window or into any of the palettes. Drawing features include data display, analysis, visualization, annotation, and in-place editing. AutoCAD supports the saving of a single drawing as multiple layers. This allows for the display of multiple versions of a drawing. The only limit to the layers is that a single layer cannot be saved twice. In the layer system, each layer has its own set of properties, including layers, colors, linetypes, dimensions, and symbology. The user can switch from one layer to the next by using the mouse, keyboard shortcuts, and by double-clicking in a drawing.
AutoCAD features a comprehensive drawing environment. Drawing tools include the ability to edit existing lines, curves, and polygons.
