Roblox is an online game platform and game creation system developed by Roblox Corporation that allows users to program games and play games created by other users. Created by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel in 2004 and released in 2006, the platform hosts user-created games of multiple genres coded in the programming language Lua. Although Roblox has received generally positive reviews from critics, it has faced criticism for its moderation, microtransactions, and exploitative practices directed toward children.
History
Roblox was founded in 2004 by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel, both of whom had worked on the EverQuest Online Adventures (EverQuest) for over a decade. At the time, EverQuest’s popularity was waning, and Baszucki and Cassel sought to relaunch their company on a smaller scale. They teamed up with software company Improbable, which gave them access to open source software, such as the World of Warcraft open source client Utherd and the id Tech 3 game engine, to develop a new massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) that they could develop on their own terms.
At the time, they were known as “Three Pillars Software”, but decided to change their name to Roblox to better reflect the game’s development. The pair also sought to improve and simplify the game’s programming language, which they renamed “Lua”, short for “Löve”, the fictional language spoken in Lövhöfn in J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
