vinegar tango is maybe the most chilling song in their repertoire, an utterly violent and crude depiction of war from a fictional disgruntled man. there’s certainly an element of sadness, which is something that’s still a vital part of maiden’s identity. the sense of humour always has been and it’s something that their never-ending touring has continued to provide. on the book of souls they bring a a hailstorm of pyrotechnics during the wicker man and they bring the house down during the trooper.
by contrast, aces high (and machete) are the absolute benchmark of their current chugging-machine setup. robert’s addition of a monstrous bottom end to the bass (piercing riff on the superb title-track), has always injected fury into maiden classics. but the only problem this setup solves is that eddie’s guitar sounds enormous on a stadium scale. never before have we had to move our heads from our seats to peer over the heads of our neighbours in order to see bruce/eddie.
this would be a dream setup in a studio environment, but’s far too much to handle while playing to thousands of sweaty, over-thrilled welshmen, who are winning every one of their men’s football legs in this country. but the ham-fisted presentation makes it sound like it’s blowing a mind out to infinity. best of all is their new single (say my name), which proves a game-changing ripper in any venue. it’s eddie’s suggestion that bruce “move your head, man” which pays dividends during the sax solo and the flapping mike moments.
there’s a clear message being sent here, and we’re not entirely sure whether it’s one they approve of. “there are some people in this country who are so frightened they’ll do anything to shut us up,” quips bruce. “i couldn’t vote ukip, not with a white van and a guitar. but i don’t know if anybody could because it’s a menace.” whether or not you’d include the single best of the beast in that equation is a debatable thing. that quip, and a set-change meant to talk of nostalgia, reminds us of what bruce’s saying. and it goes to show that iron maiden aren’t looking back, but looking forward. it’s evident in the tightness of the show, but they’re light years beyond anything they sounded like in 1982. there’s a satisfying productiveness to that. and, of course, if that means forgetting the past, it’s a route they’ll undoubtedly tread.
the run-in to 1990 was by all accounts the most tumultuous time in iron maiden history, with the departure of eerie von and the arrest of vocalist paul dianno, who was accused and later acquitted of murder. unlike the band, whose lineup remained the same until 1995, dave murray departed and his replacement was none other than bruce dickinson, who had replaced paul dianno in 1983.

following on from the commercial success of the follow-up of the number of the beast, piece of mind, iron maiden came back to their rock roots and delivered one of their most thoroughly relentless records. vampyre had apparently created a monster. it was released one year later, in 1990, and became a huge success, achieving their highest chart position ever to that time (no 8 uk). from the first track rollin, which bruce dickinson sings on in a restrained, high register, to the ultra-energetic sign of the cross, maiden were at their most inspired. songs like running free and wild man of the west still stand up to this day, a testament to how well the band made the change. in particular, the presence of a singer of bruce dickinson’s calibre brought out the aggression in the band, too, with its accompanying record, v2.
true, david ellefson’s drumming and the occasional violin by bruce “sacrificial lamb” dickinson reduced the unstoppable force of steve harris’ head-banging with a little bit of heart. but even the new guitarist, adrian smith, couldn’t take the edge off the stuff-eating band’s sweat-soaked, ranting anthems. iron maiden would have their loyal following, but in the nineties, maiden were a victim of their own success. their popularity meant that the difference between being revered and being a victim of their popularity was as important as being a pop band. one of the people who turned into this victim was bruce dickinson, who had a personal story that went along with his career, his life and his drug use. a combination of drug use, alcoholism and mental illness had led to a downward spiral that, by the mid-nineties, would lead to his diagnosis of bipolar disorder and, after he stopped taking his medication, to his retirement from touring and recording. he had a strong voice – and a dark side.
