the modbus protocol was invented in the 1970’s for industrial automation applications. modbus is still in use today, even though it was implemented over a serial line and tcp was invented in the 1970’s for the data communications applications. it is not possible to change this protocol to a different communications medium or protocol. this is true even though many of the applications have switched from rs-232 to ethernet.
what is possible is to implement a modbus device to use the standard serial port interface and define the entire application protocol, including data, function codes, and parameters. this is a great way to implement modbus over the existing serial ports and ethernet connections. the example below shows a simple example using the serial port interface and tcp/ip protocol.
a modbus device is not bound to a particular physical interface. it can be either on the serial port, ethernet, or both at the same time. the protocol does not care where the packets come from or where they go, so long as they get there. in the example below, we are using the modbus tcp protocol to talk to a serial port connected device. the master device is sending data packets to the slave device, but the packet could come from anywhere. the slave device is sending data packets back to the master. in this example, the master is using a fixed address, but the slave could use a dynamic address. in the real world, a dynamic address would be a lot more desirable.
in this example, the ip address is 192.168.2.10. the serial port device is on the serial port port as 192.10, so it can receive packets from 192. in order to receive these packets, the device must know the modbus ip address. this is easily accomplished using a device called a modbus discovery server.
modbus protocol is not a complete protocol for real-time data exchange. it is primarily a protocol for controlling a machine through a serial line. it does not directly allow for serial data to be stored, it must be generated by another protocol, such as rs232 or some other serial communication.
rs232 – the standard serial communication protocol over a network. you must have a rs232 cable or adapter from the modbus master to the rs232 port of the target device, and vice versa. you may also want to consider using rs232 over ethernet, which has very high bit rates.
if you are using rs232, rs485 or can for real-time serial data exchange, you do not need modbus. you may simply use the protocols themselves, provided the protocols have been specifically defined to provide real-time interaction.
you can use any rs232, rs485 or can protocol by using a serial port. for example, you could use the cypress device as a serial interface. this device has 8-bit rs232 interface, and 8-bit can interface. it will allow you to connect a modbus client to an rs232 port on the cypress device, and an rs485 port on the cypress device, and an rs485 port on the target device. when communicating over rs232, the target device must use modbus tcp. when communicating over rs485 or can, the target device must use modbus rtu.
any modbus device that can act as a master, can act as a slave, and the slave can be queried to determine the device’s configuration (register numbers, registers, etc). because a modbus device can act as a master, it is possible to have one that communicates with one or more other modbus devices, as illustrated in the diagram below.
