To evaluate clinical utility of traditional and emerging serum markers in breast cancer patients by comparing traditional clinicopathological prognostic indicators and the ability of these serum markers to predict the outcome of the patients. We carried out a retrospective cohort study of 357 patients who underwent primary treatment for breast cancer at Hacettepe University Hospital, Ankara, Turkey, from 2008 to 2014. The conventional clinicopathological parameters, namely age, tumor size, histological grade, lymph node metastasis, estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR) and Her2neu status, were collected from medical records. Our study focused on the time to distant metastasis, locoregional recurrence, second malignancy and death. Recurrence-free survival was determined with Kaplan-Meier and log-rank tests. To detect the prognostic value of conventional clinicopathological parameters, predictive values of clinicopathological parameters and the serum markers to predict outcome, a multivariate Cox regression model was also constructed. At 5 years, the 5-year survival rates were 96.1% and 86.1% for disease-free survival and overall survival, respectively. The 5-year distant metastasis-free survival rates were 95.2% and 91.1%, for patients who were ER(-) and PR(-) (n = 42), and patients with ER(+) and/or PR(+) (n = 305), respectively. The difference in the 5-year distant metastasis-free survival rates among patients with ER(-)/PR(-), ER(+)/PR(+) and ER(+)/PR(+)/Her2neu(+)
