This invention relates to a coke oven with a continuous gasifier and, more particularly, to a multiple hearth coke oven.
2. Description of Related Art
When coke is manufactured, a carbonaceous material, such as coal or petroleum coke, is heated to a temperature between about 1200.degree. C. and about 1300.degree. C. in a converter to volatilize hydrocarbon constituents of the carbonaceous material and produce a hot gas called “raw coke” having a temperature in the range of about 1300.degree. C. to about 1400.degree. C. The raw coke is fed to one or more coke ovens in which the hot raw coke is compressed within the oven and converted into coke by reaction with air under conditions of elevated temperature and pressure. The resultant “coke” has a particle size of about 30 microns. After the coke is formed, it is subjected to several processing steps.
One of these processing steps is a gasification process that is intended to reduce the amount of free hydrocarbons in the coke. When the raw coke is converted to coke, the number of volatile hydrocarbons present in the coke is increased. As a result of the gasification process, the free volatile hydrocarbons are converted into gases, such as hydrogen and carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide. In the past, gasification has been
