Fireworks and firecrackers are well known for their harmful potential to the public. Unfortunately, we still hear of and see many casualties of such injuries. The purpose of this study was to analyze the injury patterns, clinical symptoms, and prognosis of our prehospital and hospital records on patients with aerial fireworks injuries to better guide the emergency treatment. This study was an observational study conducted over a period of 2 years at our hospital emergency department and the State Medical Examiner’s office. Inclusion criteria included a triage code of T2 or more for aerial fireworks injuries. Only prehospital data were evaluated. The statistical significance of the differences in outcomes and injury patterns of our patients were tested using the χ2 test or the Fisher’s exact test, as appropriate. Of 30 patients (mean age, 28 years; SD, 11.6 years) with aerial fireworks injuries, 84.6% were males, and 57.1% had associated injuries. The patients sustained their injuries from firecrackers in 81% of the cases. The most common associated injuries were head and neck injuries (20.8%). The most common injury pattern was an open amputation (66.7%) and open wounds (60.8%). The most common injury symptoms were difficulty breathing and chest pain. Twenty-two patients (73.3%) were discharged home, but 5 patients were admitted to the intensive care unit, 1 was transferred to a university hospital for open reduction and internal fixation of the long bone fractures, and 2 were transferred to a larger hospital for neurosurgery consultation.
