History

AutoCAD is a member of the 3D Technical Products Group within the Autodesk Inc. (Autodesk) organization. The first version of AutoCAD was released in December 1982 as a Windows-based desktop program, an immediate success among designers because it allowed them to generate drawings on their desktop PC at a fraction of the cost of a dedicated minicomputer.

The initial development was done by Leo Dillon and Mark Surrell, two programmers from a software company called Flexem Software, where Dillon had worked on the first edition of the Sketchbook/Inspiration drawing program. The original version of AutoCAD was based on the Sketchbook/Inspiration program and some of the code was re-used. In late 1984, Leo Dillon left the company and partnered with a programming partner of his own, Jim Blasgen. The two of them renamed the company Blasgen and Dillon. In 1986, the two launched a full-featured version of AutoCAD for Windows for a price of $499. It was the first program of its type and by 1988, AutoCAD’s role in the design process had grown to become a benchmark for users and vendors of computer-aided design (CAD) products.

In 1989, Jim Blasgen left the company to start his own software company. In late 1990, Dillon teamed up with a long-time Autodesk employee named Chuck Pyle to form Altosoft. Chuck was responsible for the creation of the Application Program Interface (API), the language used to communicate with AutoCAD from the various application programming languages, and by doing so, became the co-author of the language.

On September 14, 1991, Autodesk bought Altosoft, and two years later, in August 1993, AutoCAD was released as a universal app, for the Mac and Windows environments.
