Career
J.V.Raveendran was born in Ponnam, Tamil Nadu. He has received the Tamil Nadu State Award in 1994, and the Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian award, in 2017 for his contribution to the arts, in particular music.
Raveendran started his career as a music director with “Pirandhal Ponnamma”, which was directed by his father, P. V. Raveendran. During the production of that movie, J.V. Raveendran got to hear popular music director M. S. Viswanathan and decided to learn music from him. In 1965, Raveendran got to meet M. S. Viswanathan and started learning music from him.
During the late 1970s, Raveendran became a part of music director R. K. Shekhar’s team. R. K. Shekhar produced the soundtrack for many of Raveendran’s movies in this period, including Kattukaran (1978), Surya Paata (1979), Chinna Varthaal (1980) and Avvaiyara Vanitha (1980). During the period of 1980 to 1983, Raveendran did not receive a single music director’s job despite the fact that his songs were in demand from the audience. After a long wait, he got to compose songs for K. K. Soundararajan’s movies.
