AutoCAD was named after its original inspiration, a view used in a 1984 drawing prepared by Autodesk’s original co-founder, Steve Kaufer, to help him visualize the company’s initial product idea. In the drawing, Kaufer placed a cardboard box in front of a television to help him visualize a computer-assisted drafting program. He called the program “AutoCAD,” and it was the first CAD program to be released. “View” is an old word meaning “to view.” “CAD” comes from “computer-aided design.”

Autodesk traces its history to 1982, when Steve Kaufer founded the company, which later became Autodesk, with his wife, Dorothy. Kaufer began to draw electrical schematics for a friend’s business. He was fascinated with the new digital technology that would soon transform the field of electronics. In the fall of 1981, Kaufer hired a young software engineer, Bob Fisher, to create a software program to facilitate these drawings. Fisher used the term “Auto” to give the program a unique feeling in the market.

In 1982, Kaufer had a conversation with a customer, one of his friends. Kaufer asked him what he wanted from a drafting program. “I want one that will run on my IBM personal computer,” his friend said. But that was impractical, so Kaufer asked himself, “Can I build a program that would run on my own computer?”

In response to his customer’s request, Kaufer designed the drawing software he needed, a computer-aided drafting program, which he called AutoCAD. Kaufer called his new program “Auto” because he felt that “Auto” was the right way to describe the idea of using a computer for design. For a long time, his entire office just thought AutoCAD stood for “Auto Computer-aided Drafting.”

The Italian Foreign Ministry and the Italian intelligence service’s DIGOS are working closely with the U.S. military and Iraqi security forces in the effort to free the aid workers, Frattini said.

The ministry says it believes that the kidnappers are seeking to use the aid workers as bargaining chips, similar to the way in which al Qaeda in Iraq attempted to use two Italian journalists in 2006 to secure the release of Italian hostages.

The three men, all employees of the Italian development agency Catholic Relief Services (CRS), were abducted in Baghdad on Saturday, but the ministry says a fourth man — an Italian employee of CRS who was also kidnapped — was released on Sunday.

Happy New Year

I’ll be spending this year improving my English. I hope this will be useful for me as a teacher. I have three resources available to me, two textbooks and an online dictionary. The textbooks are “Grammar Rules and Expressions” and “The Way to Speak and Write English”. For an introduction to English grammar I found this online website which is for a grammar course but all it needs is for me to read it through to understand it. It helps a lot because it is organized and it explains the subject in a very simple manner. So far, so good.

For an introduction to grammar and style I am referring to the English Grammar Reference. It is online and therefore is less expensive. It is also excellent.

I’m now able to concentrate on improving my writing skills.

I’m studying from this textbook from SparkNotes.com. It is a very helpful resource and also very entertaining.

My first few weeks in my brand new apartment. I’m living alone and this is my first apartment. I can’t say that I’m enjoying it. I don’t like the apartment’s color. It is very dark. Also, it is too big. It’s just a little too big for me. But I guess I will get used to it. I’m going to go to a friend’s house tonight and to get the whole setup.

I saw the movie “Your Highness” the other day. It was quite funny. I particularly liked the portrayal of the king of the candy. I also found a way to write a novel in 30 days. I am so glad to have found something like that. It’s a good break from my studies.
