Your terminal emulator will probably interpret the font as containing the ligature combination of the characters. It is then up to the terminal emulator to decide what it does with that combination. Some terminal emulators will insert the two characters as separate glyphs and some will interpret it as the ligature. Some fonts will use one glyph and some will use two glyphs.
It’s as if you wrote in a language that didn’t have “unexpected” characters. They happen to be everywhere and make no sense. That’s the font’s job to correct.
The correct thing to do is to use a font that contains the copyright character and correct it so that your program displays the correct ligature.
