the result of all that was a game that felt exactly like metroid: zero mission should. the planets and environments were all so much more intriguing than the basic blueprint of the original. the new game did a good job of expanding on the basics of zero mission while leaving the old intact. unlike fusion, zero mission didn’t distort the original game’s core gameplay. it added new ideas without compromising the original’s feel. everything from the new combat and exploration mechanics, to the character design and character progression, was done in a way that just didn’t feel as if it were shoehorned into the original. the in-game soundtrack was remixed to better match the new visuals, but even then the developers avoided any tampering that would have changed the original’s feel.
it was a huge leap forward for metroid’s return to the platformer genre, but it was just the beginning. with the release of super metroid, zero mission became something of a blueprint. the developers behind the new game were able to see that samus’ original abilities could be scaled down. the game would be easier, but the challenge of mastering the basic concepts of movement and combat would remain. additionally, since samus had lost her power suit, she’d be reduced to a nigh-indestructible golem of a creature when she was in a fight. so the developers created a suit that would allow her to conserve energy and wear it just in case she needed to escape. you can see its influence in super metriods armor design. we’ve seen this same kind of thinking in other post-zero mission games too, most notably the recent 2d platformer, moonrunner 2: the game. samus’ new abilities can be utilized in all kinds of interesting ways, which is a testament to the designers’ creativity.
zero mission also expands on the chozo’s influence on the space pirates. while the space pirates had a tendency to recoil from the vacuum of space, they haven’t had a problem with the ravages of radiation in fusion. instead, the space pirates have been trying to protect zebes and other worlds from the ravages of the vacuum that the chozo left behind. this is made explicit in the final chapter, where the space pirates must return a planet to the vacuum of space before the material is inhaled and consumed. zero mission also explains why the space pirates have sent out bounty hunters like samus aran. as with the chozo race, who were cast out of their homeworld and forced to live on zebes, the space pirates have had no choice but to become interstellar pirates in order to survive.
and, of course, zero mission features samus’s greatest moments – her first encounter with a metroid, her confrontation with mother brain, the fight on the prime ship, the fight on mother brain’s ship, the fight on the mother ship, and her final showdown on zebes. many of the games’s innovations are included here, too: for instance, zero-g sections and new power-ups are included here. the game also features an on-screen map to help players find their way through the galaxy. this map is a little easy to navigate, but still very helpful. the zebes-based side missions are also a lot of fun to complete. the game also features a new level select screen for easier navigation. this is great for players who want to try to beat the game on hard mode. the game’s difficulty is hiked up a bit, but the game never feels impossible. there is also a new “battle mode” that uses the same controls as the game’s main mode, but displays only samus and the enemies. it’s a nice touch, but it’s easily ignored. zero mission contains a good number of secrets as well, which is always a nice bonus.
