yet, once the main menu load and i was taking in all the difference, not so much. not only was it running at low resolution, it was running at a resolution and framerate ive never seen in a recent game. while the graphics looked good, the entire interface, logic, and everything else seemed throw away in an effort to mimic the look of its sci-fi cousin: age of empires ii: hd. if you want a futuristic rts, i recommend either rebooting into a more recent configuration or waiting until that one comes out on pc.
this was no isolated issue. the animation quality and physics engine were generally subpar. all in all, it was a truly sad moment for an open-world rts series that was so promising. the second game in a trilogy even went so far as to set-up a genuine campaign where the player wrestled power from the empire and tried to rule the world. it was a story about the future that took place centuries after the events of empires gold, which could have been a fascinating setting, but in empire earth 3, the return to the past just seems like a gimmick. it was enough to make me want to give it another chance. ive done a lot of gaming over the past couple years, and i can remember the time when strategy games werent simply bog-standard real-time tactics title, but were something wholly unique with the promise of long-term, meaningful changes. empires gold was able to revive the franchise after the disappointing empires 2, and empire earth 2 tried to take the series beyond what the previous games could offer. at its best, empire earth 3 could have been empires 4. then again, the game could have been good just on the basis of decent games of this type. but to really look back at the series, empire earth 3 was exactly what it always was, a good game that went poorly.
