Adobe’s new Expression features were announced back in October, but I’ve had a chance to play with them on a few more of my own shots. Quite impressive is the improvement of the individual adjustments that you can make in groups. For example, I wanted to brighten an image a bit without affecting the color balance. I grabbed three different adjustment groups, drag the ones I wanted to affect into the Expressions panel, and then hit Apply. It took me all of three seconds to get from custom adjustments to an actual adjustment that appears in the lightbulb icons on the panels in Photoshop. In the first version Press Pressed on the display only showed a menu. Now it shows the adjusted pixel value in the lightbulb as well, when you make any adjustment with the Expressions panel open.
While all of these new features are welcome, I’m concerned that the feature set for the average Photoshop user will remain the same. The fact that one can edit textures and canvas options in layers is important for some users. The fact that one can edit masking and paths, while impressive, is meaningless to most users.
No matter which version of Photoshop you are using, it is my belief that it is a very capable photo tool. I tend to be a bit picky with workflow, but even I appreciate the changes that have been made to Adobe’s flagship program.
In this review, we’re looking at a new version of Adobe Photoshop Elements, a popular photo-editing program for beginners and hobbyists, which premiered in 1998. The program retails for $99.99, but its entry-level version, Elements 11, is free.
