AutoCAD has been around for more than 30 years, and at some point during its lifetime it has become the de facto standard in the United States for creating 2D architectural drawings, engineering drawings, and blueprints. Although it may seem archaic in many ways, AutoCAD still has a solid and growing community of users, and is definitely a heavyweight in the CAD world.

AutoCAD was designed with a simple philosophy: to let the user define the drawing. There are very few predefined styles, but when you want to use a predefined style, it is an easy switch. AutoCAD uses a point-and-click interface, and you can freely move objects around the drawing area. Your drawing is made of AutoLISP files (a dialect of the Lisp programming language), which are text files. It is possible to make changes to the drawing itself, but in many cases it is easier to start a new drawing file.

AutoCAD comes in both MS-DOS and Windows versions. Windows users can still use the DOS version. The DOS version is free to use, but the Windows version comes with a price tag. AutoCAD 2016 for Windows is no longer supported, but the AutoCAD 2015 family of applications (AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, AutoCAD Architecture, and AutoCAD Web, to name a few) is still actively developed.

Setting up a new project in AutoCAD

If you just have a blank drawing area, first you will want to set the default units. The drawing area will be displayed in either US (or English) units (or metric) by default, but the coordinate system can be changed. You can choose between four different coordinate systems:

Right-handed (US/English) Left-handed (French/Spanish/German/English/Metric) Top-down (French/Spanish/German) Bottom-up (British/Canadian/French/Spanish/German)

To change the coordinate system, you need to select the Drawing Units tab in the Preferences dialog box. Choose the coordinate system that you want and click OK.

If you are having trouble finding the drawing units tab, look for the Coordinate System drop-down menu on the Drawing Units tab. You can change it there.

Save the pdf file that you downloaded in the Autocad temporary folder and open it.

Select “open with…” and select “Autodesk Autocad”
Activate Autocad as administrator by clicking on the “Allow” button.

Restart the computer and Autocad should launch.

Press “R” to open the registration screen.

Click the “New Registration” button and follow the instructions on screen.

Save the registration and install it.

Before starting any sketching or designing you need to activate the Autodesk Autocad:

Uninstall the current version of Autodesk Autocad
Remove Autocad from the task bar
Restart the computer

I have only tried this in Windows 7 and it seems to work. I tested this in Ubuntu Linux (32bit) and also in a MacBook Pro (64bit) and they also both seem to work.

Apparently there is no 32-bit version available for Autocad. There are lots of suggestions on how to get around this, including using the 64-bit version on a 32-bit system. I tried this and it didn’t seem to work for me. I tried it on a Mac running Mac OSX 10.7 (lion).
My alternative was to use the 32-bit version of Autocad on a 64-bit system. So I created a 32-bit virtual machine, installed the 32-bit version of Autocad, and ran it in that virtual machine. This was pretty easy. I was able to download and install it (using the 64-bit version on the virtual machine) and run it without issue.

I used microsoft’s Free Download Center on autocad 2011.
I had to download the trial version, not the full version, but it works just fine.

I’m running it on a 64bit Windows 7, and I’m not sure what you’re running, but I think it’ll work fine on a 32bit Windows.
