In the year 2503, the mega-corporation Orb was created. Fast-forward 1,000 years or so later, Orb employees are sent to work on the space station Orb. Each Orb is separated from the other Orb personnel, thus creating the existence of another culture that cannot be seen or heard by the other Orb employees. However, in this time period, Orb also creates the humanoid Rob character.
Rob is created on Orb as a normal human being. He has no flaws. Shortly after being created, Rob is taken to Orb’s space station to work on Orb projects. Rob is alone in Orb. No-one knows of him.
Once upon a time, an Orb employee reported to work by saying, “Forgive me, Orb.”
Rob goes through life from day to day. He never asks questions and always works hard. People see him as a robot because he does not have any emotions.
But then, one day, with no warning or explanation, Orb brings Rob into the world. Orb takes Rob away from a quiet, simple life and begins to give Rob emotions, memories, and situations to play with.
It’s odd, because although Rob has emotions, memories, and has situations to play with, it is only those from Orb that he has access to. He can make these happen in his life, but he can never access them when he is off Orb.
And then, of course, the orb begins to get bigger…
Orb 4.0 Describe Yourself:
Orb 4.0 is a much enhanced orb that is more than capable of looking after Rob himself. She is more than capable of carrying Rob around, for Rob has to be carried around in some way. So Orb, that orbs daughter, gets to be the vehicle that Rob will be used in.
Orb 4.0 looks after Rob by providing the following features:
1. Orb 4.0 can store Rob’s files and provide Rob with access to them.
2. Orb 4.0 can detect when Rob has downloaded files and notify Rob of the data.
3. Orb 4.0 can remove files from Rob so he does not download them again.
4. Orb 4.0 has a built-in webcam so Rob can be monitored when he is off Orb.
5. Orb 4.0 can store and access Rob’s photos, music, videos and memories.

I developed Desktop Rob as a simple script for Rob. Rob, it’s name says it all. He’s an orb with a blue dot for a head. He was originally created as a concept for a website where he could spin around the screen and interact with the user. But, as it grew, it was decided that it could benefit to have Rob placed on the desktop. What better way then to add animation, a flippers and a simple background. And that’s what you get.
Move Rob left and right
When Rob the orb is in focus (ie: When the screen is dark) and the user uses the left or right arrow keys he will move forward and backward along the x axis in the direction his arrow key is being held. When Rob is in focus, he will move in the opposite direction of his current axis.
Change Rob’s gravity
When Rob is in focus, and the user uses the space bar, Rob will flip his gravity to face the opposite direction as his current orientation. When he is in focus with the space bar you may notice that the color of Rob’s wings has a 90 degree rotation. This is to mimick and reflect his new orientation. So, if Rob is in focus with the right arrow key, his gravity will rotate so that his wings are oriented to the right. (Looks like a robot flying forward) This also applies to his left arrow key.
Change Rob’s skin
When Rob is in focus and the user uses the ctrl key, the skin of Rob will change. The skin of a game object is comprised of any kind of texture applied to it.

– The animations of Rob, when rotating and flipping, have been added. These are animated versions of the original sprite, not the PNG graphics (which can be found in the desktop_rob_animation.zip file.
– Double clicking the Rob icon toggles the lock control of Rob. This will lock Rob so that he cannot be interacted with by the user (when Rob is locked, the left click will cancel to stop Rob from spinning, and the arrow keys will do nothing). When the lock is off, it will be obvious that Rob is interactive, because Rob will be in focus, and can spin, fly, and flip. (This can be toggled by clicking the mouse button once, twice, or 3 times to lock/unlock Rob.)

What’s New In Desktop Rob?

Rob is a small orb which can sit on your desktop and acts as a space invader, a camera, and an information device. He can sit in any one of three different shapes and can move freely around your desktop (as long as there is enough space).
Rob can also be used as a camera – pressing the M key causes Rob to record video. Every time Rob’s turn signal is on (just like a real camera) it will stop recording automatically.
Once Rob is activated, you can move him around by using the arrow keys. If you press space while Rob is in focus, his gravity will be inverted, allowing him to fall down and fall on top of objects.
Rob’s area of control is pretty large (there is more than enough space to control him in full). You can move him around by using the arrow keys and press space to make him fall.

4. Start the Desktop Rob application
5. Click on Rob on your desktop.

2. Press Esc to deselect the skin.

3. Press the Spacebar to return Rob to his original position (if he is not currently moving).
