History

AutoCAD was developed by AutoDesk as an extension of their previous architectural and mechanical drafting product. The AutoCAD application was originally written in a proprietary programming language known as PathScript. As there was only one CAD product available at that time, this was seen by many as a strong selling point. The software was designed to be platform-independent, so it could be used on all major platforms. Initially released on the Apple II, it was also available for IBM-compatible personal computers running DOS. In 1983, the software was expanded to include laser, tape and plotters. This allowed the software to be used for industrial design, architectural, mechanical, and engineering projects.

In 1983, a version of AutoCAD was released as a second, free version (known as “Basic”). Basic was a simple version of AutoCAD designed to let users try AutoCAD, without requiring a purchase. Basic was available for IBM-compatible PCs running DOS.

In 1986, the second version of AutoCAD for Apple II was released. The Apple II version added support for a Raster Display and included the ability to import and edit files created by other CAD programs such as DGN, Intergraph’s Alias system, SEG-DUO (a suite of vector graphics and CAD software used for industrial drafting and design), MicroStation, and AutoLISP. The ability to import files created by other programs enhanced the software’s usability as well as adding features that were available to users of other software. The software could be used for the drafting and design of small-scale objects such as architectural drawings and vehicle designs. AutoCAD for the Apple II also included a form of limited compatibility with a relatively new CAD program called MicroStation, which ran on the Mac Plus and Quadra computers. This compatibility allowed some Mac Plus users to import their AutoCAD files directly into MicroStation.

In the late 1980s, the software began to develop into a full-fledged drafting and design tool that ran on personal computers. At this point, the software was free to AutoDesk customers who purchased AutoCAD for the Apple II or DOS. AutoCAD began to be used in architectural design and modeling work, as well as for mechanical and industrial design. By 1990, the software had also begun to be used for image editing. Data formats
The core data format used by AutoCAD is the Autodesk interchange data format. The interchange format supports a wide variety of data that may be part of the file, such as text data, raster image data, geometry, metadata, and additional binary data.

The interchange format supports a set of specific binary data formats. These include the following:
DXF – The DXF file format, which is native to AutoCAD and used for most of its data.
DWG – The AutoCAD 2007 format, which is similar to the DXF format, but is not based on the traditional ASCII “DOS” data format.
DGN – Used for architectural drawings and was introduced with AutoCAD 2007, is a non-ASCII character format that is a superset of DXF and a subset of DGN.
DWF – The AutoCAD 2008 format, which is based on the DXF file format but only for planar solids.
DWX – The AutoCAD 2010 format, which is similar to the DXF file format.
MDX – The AutoCAD 2013 format, which is based on the DWF file format but which allows for 3D solids and shells.
DXF for 3D – Used for 3D solid modeling only and was introduced with AutoCAD 2014.
DWG for 3D – Used for 3D solids and was introduced with AutoCAD 2014.
MDX for 3D – Used for 3D solids and shells and was introduced with AutoCAD 2015.
DXF for DWG – Used for DWG editing.
DWG for DWG – Used for DWG editing.
XDP – Used to describe an image using free form XMP tags, used in XMP files.

The castings were then examined for uniformity and aesthetic acceptability. The ability to reproduce uniform thin-walled casting was demonstrated by a relative standard deviation (RSD) of only 0.02. This technique also produced acceptable castings in which the exposed surface areas were uniformly clear, and the casting had no signs of a thin, brown surface. From the castings produced with an additional O-ring, it was concluded that the technique had an acceptably low level of inherent defects.
