This article explains the principles of creating 3D models in Autodesk® AutoCAD® software. The author assumes no prior knowledge of AutoCAD or its programming. The goal of this article is to describe the creation of a 3D model using standard AutoCAD functions as opposed to using one of the 3D editing tools found in AutoCAD.
To obtain the data to create a 3D model, two methods are described. The first uses images of the object to be modeled. The second is based on creating a 3D model from CAD files.
Scanned images are the most commonly used to create 3D models. The next two sections provide step-by-step instructions for creating a simple 3D model. The final section illustrates a more advanced approach.
1. Create a model from scratch
To create a 3D model from scratch you need to have two types of 3D data:
Geometry — The collection of 3D lines, 3D faces, and 3D points needed to model an object
Geometric properties — The attribute data such as color, dimensions, and other geometric properties needed to style the geometry
All 3D data is stored in the 3D model as an assembly of 2D objects called entities. Objects (geometric entities) are the elements that make up the 3D model. Entities are either plane (2D) or solid (3D).
The basic idea of the 3D modeling process is to use the AutoCAD command CREATE, which lets you create either a new drawing or a new feature in an existing drawing. You specify the new drawing’s drawing-space coordinate system, then you specify one or more entities to include in the new drawing. You can use various methods to create and maintain the 3D entities. The article “Methods for creating, editing, and maintaining 3D entities” (Annex A) contains a complete discussion of the various methods.
1.1 Create a new drawing
Click the Create Drawing button on the Application menu or, in the drawing area, click the New Drawing icon ().
On the Drawings tab of the New Drawing dialog box, you can specify whether you want to create a new 2D drawing, a 3D drawing, or an assembly drawing. (See the “Drawings” section for more information on these types of drawings.) For more information on drawing types, see “Drawing types.

In AutoCAD LT the scripting of any API other than those mentioned above is not supported.
In AutoCAD for Windows, there are some limitations to what can be scripted, due to the limited language support. AutoLISP has full support in AutoCAD LT for Windows. AutoCAD commands can be placed in the project file that control the functionality of the drawing.
AutoCAD also supports XML.
AutoCAD XML is an extension to XML language for AutoCAD which allows flexible creation of XML documents. It has also been used to import XML into AutoCAD or display the contents of an XML document in the property windows. The XML support is only available on the AutoCAD 2017 and earlier releases.
AutoCAD has an XML page language that allows users to create web pages for sharing files and information. The XML page language does not have its own API but users can use the API of VBA for creating web pages or visual LISP for creating web pages.
