The centerpiece of this mIRC add-on is Blowfish, an encryption algorithm first released in 1991. It is a symmetrical block cipher, also known as a stream cipher, which is an algorithm that encrypts a block of data using an encryption key. While block ciphers usually encrypt the same data using the same key, they can vary with regard to which key length they use.
The Blowfish encryption algorithm uses 16 bytes (128 bits) of secret key data. That means that the same key is used to perform the same number of encryptions. This is one of the reasons it is considered a symmetric key algorithm, as it uses the same key to encrypt and decrypt.
In 1998, the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) released a known-plaintext attack that was used to decrypt Blowfish-encrypted data. The attack exploits a weakness in the way the cipher is executed. As a result, many applications use the AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) algorithm as a replacement. MIRCRYPTION supports both Blowfish and AES algorithms. You have the option of using one of them or both.
The MIRCRYPTION Script
The MIRCRYPTION script can be either mixed directly into the.mcw and.mcc files or, if you are running mIRC in.dll or.pdb files, you will need to move the script to the scripts folder.
To use MIRCRYPTION, simply install the script by dragging and dropping it into your installation folder. Alternatively, select “Add Script…” from the script menu of the Options dialog (View → Options → Scripts). In order to access and modify the script’s options, you’ll need to make sure that the MIRCRYPTION Add-On is installed.
This add-on features a comprehensive sample script and all options available are described in detail in the attached documentation. Once activated, all chan_* commands will appear in the same menu.
