Mersolae (), also known as Meroë, is a town and a former municipality in Aetolia-Acarnania, West Greece, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Agrinio, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 80.562 km2. Population 1,534 (2011). The town is located along the road from Mersin to Igoumenitsa in the west. It was a city and a bishopric.

Ancient history

Mersolae was founded by the governor of the region during the last phase of the Hellenistic period, Lycophron, a wealthy man who belonged to the royal house of Sparta, about 30 km south of the Aegean Sea coast. With the decision of Lycophron, a modest city of about a thousand inhabitants was founded at the shores of Lake Kastoria.

In the 2nd century AD, a Latin Bishopric was founded by the Roman emperor Trajan (r. 98–117) and named in honour of Meroë, a powerful queen of the Osroenians who ruled in the area at that time. Saint Nikolaos of Meroë (), was a monk of the city.

It was renamed the Latin Bishopric of Mersola in 1895. In 1966 it was renamed to its current name, Mersolae.

Bishopric
Together with Tarsus the Bishopric of Mersola was among the most important of Asia Minor. It was created in 114. The metropolis was moved from Tarsus to Mersolae, where the new diocese was one of the thirty-three in the province of Tarsus. The bishop had his own palace in the city. He was assisted by a presbyter in the city who was nominated by the bishop. He had a synod and in the early 4th century, the bishop had his own Primate, a title that was also used in Britain.
