David Baszucki and Erik Cassel founded Roblox in July 2004 to create games to build virtual worlds, which was an idea they developed while working at EA Online Studios as game developers. In September 2004, the pair released a text-based online role-playing game named “Dreams” on Web site Andrew.com. In the game, players take the roles of characters who exist in a virtual world, and can interact through text messages. By December, the pair had expanded their game into a game engine called “Rube” that could be used to create user-generated games. The two released “Rube” in March 2005 and continued to refine it into their final version, “Rube 2”, in September.
In January 2006, the pair released “Rube 2” and an online publisher, called the RubeFactory, at the end of January. In March 2006, Roblox Corporation was launched, and “Rube2” became “Rube Studio”, with “Rube2” and “Rube Studio” becoming separate games in June.
