Why do we care? Why do we want to organise the content in this particular way? First and foremost, we want to get a large amount of material online and accessible to students, researchers and practitioners around the world. This includes content that is relevant for all the very different kinds of libraries in different places and cultures. But if that isnt enough, we also want to ensure that Hinari is as user-friendly and as easy to use as possible. This means that it needs to be focused, easy to navigate, and generally welcoming to all.

As students and residents of the future, the next generation of information professionals, you may be interested in how our database evolves. More specifically, you may wonder why one section of the database contains predominantly content, whilst others do not? Why are the ones that do have special access functions, such as password protection? Why do different things need different permissions? And, more importantly, why is this all delivered in a central, controlled, secure environment through an easy to use interface? For the answers to these questions, we invite you to read on…

Although this is usually only applicable to Hinari, the question still stands for all databases: what would it look like if researchers and students had access to all the content in the world through a series of clicks? This is what HINARI aims to be. How does it work? Through the creation of a new Hinari database, this is achieved by taking copies of the Open Access journals and putting them into a new database structure. Once this has happened, everyone has access to the content and can browse it as they would access any other database. However, what makes HINARI special is that not only is the content in a database but also the structure and the way the data is presented. This new, centralised, database format is designed to make the best use of all the content and to maximise the overall accessibility of the project. This means that there are many features not available in the Open Access journals themselves, such as the ability to tailor the layout of the Hinari database to make it easy to navigate and to find material. Furthermore, there are also additional content features, such as a new vocabulary management system designed to allow users to add terms they recognise, such as drug names or biological pathways.

The HINARI Online Library is an integral part of the Research4Life Projects, an ambitious effort to rapidly identify, evaluate, disseminate and implement information resources and technologies that can improve health and productivity. Research4Life is mainly a research project involving the development of a new generation of databases to support research and a project for the development of information delivery systems that support evidence-based health care. These two projects have been supported by a grant from a major drug company to develop HINARI. The new generation of HINARI databases are helping to provide new ways of information access and research in all health care settings. The databases are the only ones of their kind in the world. The databases have already been used to provide evidence-based medical decisions. The second project, called the Research4Life information system, is designed to enable the rapid identification of and access to the right information to facilitate evidence-based health care by doctors. The Research4Life system was designed by pharmaceutical companies, but the drug company has been supported by the US National Science Foundation to build it in partnership with the Indian scientific community. The free access to all HINARI contents is giving access to over the world’s largest and most detailed bibliographic database. The project has been supported by the US government through its Scientific Knowledge Commission. The objective of the HINARI project is to develop one of the world’s largest online databases for biomedical literature. It is a 1.5 billion US dollars initiative that involves important interfaces with other Information Retrieval based systems such as PubMed and MEDLINE. The Research4Life Consortium (RT4L) includes research institutes in India and the USA. The Consortium members include universities, research and diagnostic institutes, hospital administrations and academic medical associations in India and the United States. The RT4L, funded by the US National Science Foundation, has developed the HINARI Online Library to help medical research and teaching institutions access the most recent biomedical literature.
