The experiment consisted of four weeks of cognitive training (weeks 1 and 2) and four weeks of cognitive training (weeks 3 and 4) as well as three control weeks (weeks 5, 6, and 7). Three weeks of training involved an adaptive n-back task whereas four weeks of training involved an adaptive dual n-back task. These training exercises were compared to three weeks of control conditions of no training, which occurred before the start of the second experimental phase. The fMRI sessions were scanned at the MRI Center of the Brain Institute in Rome during the training weeks and at the Laboratory of Cognitive Neuroscience of the University of Trento during the control weeks. Both the training group and the control group received fMRI training sessions at the same time of the day. The same groups of participants were scanned at both locations. Brain images were classified into two groups: control and training. Training group: brain images of participants that completed either cognitive training or control sessions. Control group: brain images of participants that completed neither cognitive training nor control sessions. The Cognitive Training Materials in this study consisted of verbal and visuo-spatial stimuli corresponding to the n-back task (ranging from 1 to 3). After completing the cognitive training, most participants reported to feel they had an improved performance in the task relative to the control participants. This finding is consistent with other studies in the literature. However, there is only limited evidence that this short training can improve aspects of cognitive function or change how a person interprets the world. Participants were scanned during the first two training weeks before undergoing fMRI training. They were then scanned again on the last two training weeks to determine if there were any brain changes to the training. The training group had more sessions than the control group (12 or 12 vs. 6 or 6), and therefore more exposure to each session of training. They completed 4 sessions per training week or per control week, each session lasting approximately 20 minutes. They received over all 5 blocks of training per session, each block taking 20 minutes. The MRI sessions were completed in the brain imaging laboratory, where participants lay supine inside the scanner. This proved to be somewhat problematic for two participants, who developed claustrophobia, requiring them to abort the sessions and be removed. Data were collected using a 3 Tesla Phillips MR scanner with an 8-channel phased array coil. Pulse oximetry was used to monitor heart rate throughout the experiment. Two series of functional T2-weighted blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) functional MR images were obtained using gradient-echo echo-planar imaging (EPI) sequence (TR/TE = 2000/30 ms, FOV = 220 mm, flip angle 90 degrees, matrix = 64 x 64, slice thickness = 3 mm). In the first series of 10 EPI scans, 90 time series (contiguous axial slices) of 3-mm thickness with no gap between slices, were obtained covering the whole brain. In the second series of eight EPI scans, 40 contiguous time series of 3-mm thickness with no gap between slices were obtained covering the brain only. The same set of task blocks was used as in our previous study (Triplett and Sweetser, 2009) and consisted of verbal and visuo-spatial versions (two blocks each) of the cognitive training. Time series data were analyzed with SPM8 (), implemented within Matlab (The MathWorks, Inc., Natick, MA, USA). Time series were spatially realigned, segmented, and spatially normalized into standard space using the tissue probability map of the Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI) group brain.
