The Yaesu has a built-in function that is supposed to help you find an unknown frequency. The radio scans up to 16 different frequencies, in 2.5 kHz increments, and then it lets you know which frequency is detected. The manual says that the radio cannot scan frequencies outside of the ham bands. This makes sense given that you can easily lose a crucial contact this way. But sometimes you can find something useful outside of ham bands, or at least the manual says you might.
If you are new to ham radio, this is a good radio. If you have an existing radio, and it breaks, it is a good backup, as you can use it to learn how to fix it yourself. The Yaesu is supposed to be one of the better brands of ham radios in terms of dependability. If you ever hear a short or there is a problem with your Yaesu, you can count on getting a reply from someone on the local club.
Signal quality is slightly lower than the Baofeng. It is supposed to detect faint signals. This does happen, but its not common. I had no problem operating the Yaesu without a scope. It often has trouble doing so.
The Yaesu comes with a bag. It can hold up to about two hours of runtime. With a two hour bag, this can last several months. This is a good design, as there are often power outages or emergencies, which can mean a few hours without power. So if you have to park the radio, you dont have to worry about running out of batteries.
The audio quality of the Yaesu is not good. Your voice may be distorted when transmitting, unless you lower the output power. This isn’t a problem for most people, but it is a problem if you are talking to people who can hear. Another problem that people have sometimes with the Yaesu is that it does not fire up when it is turned on. I’ve been told this is more a problem with the firmware than the radios. So be sure to load the operating software every time you use the Yaesu.
After I purchased this radio, I was anxious to test it to see if it lived up to the great reviews Ive read. In addition to comparing it to my BaoFeng QTH, I decided to test it against my Yaesu dual-band handheld, with their V2c software. I thought the Baofeng was the top-of-the-line transceiver, and the Yaesu handheld was the step-down model. It was a great test subject because it was almost exactly the same as the BaoFeng, but a little less power and range, and also would not be as easy to work in thick vegetation like youd have with a handheld. (They both have similar frequency ranges though; 80-520 kHz, compared to 80-560 kHz for the BaoFeng.)
My girlfriend and I usually use a larger outdoor antenna for our Yaesu dual-band handheld for full power operation on 80 meters. If youre confident enough in your knowledge of radio, you dont need a separate antenna for 2m and 80 meters, so that isnt an issue here. However, the Yaesu is one of the few dual-band handhelds that has the ability to convert internally from 10 meters to 2 meters. If you are a little less confident about your knowledge of antennas and have a separate antenna for 2m and 80 meters, you might want to consider using one.
The Yaesu is also designed to receive digital AM signals from other radio hams. The manufacturer recommends using the Yaesu Web site, www.yamm.com, to set up this feature. Once it is configured, the radio will monitor up to 20 other radio amateurs simultaneously. If an emergency situation should occur, digital communication with the other hams will be provided via a flashing red light on the Yaesu. To switch the radio on for monitoring, press the OK button. An on-screen menu allows you to select one of the channels that you wish to monitor. You can then place the radio in listen mode by pushing and holding the PTT button while also pressing the OK button. Once it is in listen mode, the channel information will scroll at the rate of 1 Hz per second. To monitor another channel, press the OK button, and then select a channel from the on-screen menu. Pressing and holding the PTT will switch the radio to monitoring mode. This process can be repeated as needed.
