triplicate girl plans to have all the members of the justice league killed and atlantea’s mother will use the league’s equipment to conquer the earth. the league are caught completely off-guard and triplicate girl captures john and wally, revealing to them that they are thanagarians. bruce and flash try to rescue the two and john uses his superhero powers to stop triplicate girl, but the thanagarian’s attacks kill the flash and knock him into a coma. batman learns that triplicate girl is actually triplicate girl, and she reveals that her planet is in the middle of a civil war. the xebel are good people, just like the league and batman, and their attack on earth is an act of self-defense. triplicate girl is forced to admit her race has gone astray, but they are better than the league because they made their mistakes and stopped themselves. she says that she wants to save earth and they both agree to work together.
as the league confronts atlantea’s mother, they see that the thanagarians are using the sub to open up a portal to their world, revealing that the thanagarian home planet is dying. atlantea asks them to leave the planet, but the league turn her down. the xebel explain that the thanagarian home planet is dying and they need earth’s technology to save them. triplicate girl then reveals that they are only doing this to get the league to leave. batman is enraged that they might use earth’s technology, but triplicate girl says they will only take what they need, and john agrees to help, but only if batman does too.
batman takes the league to meet with his ally commissioner gordon, who has been helping to hide the league. he admits that he’s not sure what to believe, but gordon feels that the league’s involvement is the best way to help the thanagarians. batman and flash then leave the room, leaving the league to speak to gordon alone. flash reveals that the league need their own power source and suggests that they should go back to the mothership. however, john tells him that they are not leaving without batman.
on earth, an alert is sent out to the justice league when a spaceship comes out of hyperspace. the league immediately heads to the location and is met by john stewart and the s.t.a.r. labs team. they tell the league that the spaceship is the thanagarian mothership. green lantern then uses his ring to take the ship’s engines offline, allowing the league to board the ship in their civilian clothes. the league then begin to fight their way through to the bridge. green lantern and martian manhunter begin to fight, but martian manhunter is defeated and then green lantern is defeated. wonder woman and batman are next, and they begin fighting. wonder woman is defeated by batman. batman then fights superman, and superman is defeated. batman then attempts to attack shayera, but she breaks free and punches him in the face. she then tells him that she knows that he is a hero, that he can defeat the thanagarians, and that they can escape. before they can fight, however, superman appears and takes batman away, and she is shocked that he’s alive.
bruce and diana return to the league hq and go to the shared batcave. bruce gets a call from general swanwick, telling him the league is in the process of deciding on hawkgirl’s fate. bruce lets the league know that he has taken the lead on the matter and that they will allow her to remain, if that is her wish, but he won’t tolerate their making her an example. swanwick asks if the league is ready to decide, but bruce tells him to stand down. when he later asks, bruce tells him he wants a meeting with the league, just him and them.
