the development at the eastern end is probably the more important part of the package, as it is here that one will see a lot of the scenery and is the most realistic scenery that was used by the simulation experts at orbx. the idea, according to the developers, is to create a human-scale community that is part of an island of some importance in the pacific.
each individual shop and service building has been modeled and the details are very realistic. there are a lot of windows and doors and some cross sections are modelled. the signs at the ground level are visible in the model and have been detailed in several languages in the ground. this is the most detailed building kit that i have seen for a wu so far. unfortunately, the textures werent added yet, but its on my to do list. and the textures of some of the other kits seem to be more detailed as well..
most of the scenery is in landscape files, but of course the runway is already in the map and its in great detail. the entire south coast is detailed as well as the area around san miguel. but i didnt need them, since in the beginning i was only able to fly the same over this area every time. as soon as the first mongers came, a helicopter landed on the beach and was already up and running as soon as the trip was repeated. the island has 8 possible landing spots..
but there is enough land surface and the terrain is a bit more realistic and detailed than in previous wus. the island is not a steep hill. but the way it is represented reminds me of the “entrances” to the island, which are a bit like stairs that go down and down, so that the simulation can take into account the realistic size of the island.
the scenery is a great representation of the canary islands and in my opinion is well worth the €40 cost. it was easy to fly and was a great test of the new terrain a.m.d. plugin. this plugin seems great and can be purchased from orbx for a fee.
the package installs a number of models and scenery objects into your fs9 scenery folder. this includes aerodromes, airfields, bridges, buildings, runway lights, ground power units and various other structures, as well as the runway environment. using the scenery tab of the fsai_orbx_kavx_catalina folder, i searched for the airport of interest which was la palma. i selected the runway and a small weather icon appeared in the top left of the scenery window. when i selected the airport icon, the runway and taxiways appeared with an airplane painted on the runway.
kavx avalon airport is a nice airport with a large recreational field. it is a fairly small airport with just one runway. it’s also the only airport on catalina island with a recreational field. a good airport with an open field and a view of the water makes this airport a great place to spend the day. this airport is also a must for acebase users.
