humpty is in a bit of a situation. he has been rejected by his dad, his buddies are all too busy with their new girlfriends, and kavya wants to get married. but kavya’s life has changed drastically over the years. she has thrown away her dreams and moved to delhi, where she works in a boutique and spends her evenings at the store. humpty wants to know if his wedding can be a celebration of his and kavyas life together or if it should be about getting married and forgetting all the other stuff that they have done. what starts out as a simple question turns into a rousing quest for the meaning of life and love.

the film is a little long, but it still keeps the audience hooked. but the film is overlong in some scenes, and many of the conversations are really awkward. humpty sharma ki dulhania is a complete package, from the crisp visuals to the writing, and it shows.

i love it when a film, not just a genre film, gives the audience a complete package. it just feels like a bigger experience, one that you can’t get anywhere else. kudos to the director for making a film that he seems to be proud of, and showing that love and laughter, is the best medicine.

the second half of the film is a bit of a damp squib. it spends too much time on the romantic parts, and ends up being a bit of a letdown. there were a lot of good things about this movie, but it just doesn’t live up to the standard set by the first half.

it’s a nice surprise and the film builds up a lot of steam with it. there are some interesting scenes and it’s a little more grown up than the first half of the movie.

but humpty sharma ki dulhania loses steam as it progresses. the second half of the movie spends a lot of time on the romantic side of the story.

the romance in humpty sharma ki dulhania is a sweetly understated affair; it is not hard to see why this film has been praised for its subtlety, and its timing. the film features more than its fair share of romantic gestures (such as that tearful moment mentioned earlier), and some of the more obvious romantic moments feel forced. but its a small problem, and it certainly does not detract from this films overall quality.
in this, humpty sharma ki dulhania succeeds in being both realistic and relatable. despite being played as a love story (a genre that is notoriously tough to pull off successfully), it avoids the romantic bubble that can often surround such stories. the script is tight and well-crafted, and even though its a coming-of-age story, it never forgets to offer its audience a good, solid, well-written movie.

it doesn’t hurt that kavya is gorgeous (she has the face of a doll), that she is a fantastic dancer, and that she happens to be humpty’s sweetheart, but the romantic side of the story is the meat and potatoes of the film. for a while, anyway. for the first time in the movie, kavya feels like a real person, and one who is not dependent on the boy who happens to be her husband-to-be.
