the cd-rom game anthology would of course be a direct competitor to the more-or-less-daily newspaper comic book, especially if the comics were produced by well-known creators. and indeed this is what the sia did, creating a monthly comic anthology to complement the monthly cd-rom game anthology. the only problem was that the comics were just not that interesting. while there were a few good stories in there, they werent worth more than a brief scan in a daily newspaper, so the really successful comic book was one produced by none other than warren ellis. ellis had been writing for the sia since at least the late 1980s, and in 1992 he had published a story about a game designer who is commissioned to create a game to help stop a multinational corporation from polluting the environment, only to find that the game is really a kind of interactive comic-book. the story would be reprinted, in a slightly truncated form, in heavy metal‘s companion comic book, and it was this story which would become the inspiration for one of the most successful and influential cd-rom game anthologies of all time: interactive cd-rom for the pc.
the toy industry was already at work on some of the technologies necessary for this, and when the set-top boxes hit the market it was clear that they had an audience. one was the harry potter and the philosopher’s stone series, whose wizards and witches would be played out on the video screens of homes across the country. the other was the video games. the movie industrys fascination with interactive technology was already very well-established, and in the late 1980s and early 1990s interactive movies were taking off. the adventures of beany and cecil, and especially the secret of monkey island (both lucasarts games), had already released some years earlier but by the time the princess bride hit the theaters in march 1990 the interactive entertainment market had already begun to come into its own. the game is set in the old west, in a time before computers, and has you playing an in-game version of yourself, using a cross-eyed, gizmo-toting, side-kick character named flora. the game is a mix of role-playing and word-guessing, and is of an unusual sort for games, as it is based on the movie. it doesnt follow the plot of the film in the traditional sense (both the game and the movie take place after the events of the film, but the game is set in a far-flung future of off-screen), but the characters and the plot are very similar and the game is very much the highlight of the film. the game requires the player to go around solving puzzles and defeating enemies, and the hard work is rewarded with jokes and references to the movie, and with the chance to see flora in all her glory. you play the game through in about fifteen or twenty minutes, and then play it again on the movie to see how you fared.
the game companies themselves tended to put the emphasis on their software side, and that meant budgets that were large enough to offer the sort of quality that could actually handle the full motion-video and night-and-day interactive layer being proposed. while activision, which had a large interactive-movie staff already, went all-out on kinoautomat, sierra on-line, one of the smallest of the companies involved, would wind up with one of the largest and most ambitious of the entire crop. originally founded in 1979 by warren spector, vice president of lucasarts, as a game-development company, sierra on-line was quietly making a name for itself on both the adventure-game and action-game fronts. the company was contracting for the game-design business, working on titles such as the underground legend hard hat mack and for the systems design house synapse, where its recently finished title, the sequel to flashback! titled flashback: memories of the quest, would be the first game to support the new action replay cartridge that would allow users to edit existing games and save their own code. (the ability to play a game with a friends gamepad or any other controller, even if it had been laid off in the arno valley, was something that, once it got going, was going to become a key attraction for the new medium.)
