The media is incensed by the idea that one woman, seemingly, could take away so many lives. The suggestion that one woman could take away all the men who raped her is an even more powerful symbol. Men were outraged and men were drawn to her, she had become a kind of totemic figure, a monstrous figure, the girl from Bandit Queen, who has earned the sympathy and respect of Indias women. She is a woman who fought for her very survival, who threatened to rape men at gunpoint, who, in saving herself, freed them of the guilt of rape. They couldnt take her life, couldnt keep her name, she was Nirbhaya. Were these women the women of Bandit Queens past? Were these women the children of her daughter, the daughters of Phoolans mother, the daughters of that woman who heroically declined the offer of a government post? Were these women a fable, a myth, the distant cousins of the countless women on whose backs the Indian constitution had been built? Could this woman be a woman for us now?
After her death, Phoolan Devi was buried, unofficially, as a bhagirat, a woman of the Ganga area, the kind of commoner soul Kapurs movie depicts. Bhagirat or not, Phoolan Devi was a woman highly regarded in her tribe. She was the daughters mother the courtesan, Lalu, who is also a character in the movie. Another character, Meena, Phoolan Devis best friend, is played by the wonderful Sanjeev Seth, whose believable portrayal adds to the movie. There are strong performances, too, from actors as minor as Shaleen Malhotra, playing Shiv Devis, and Santosh Sivan, playing Pandey, the leader of the band. This bandit turned husband is so believable as a man in love with Phoolan that it is almost unbelievable.
At the end of the documentary, there is a screening of Phoolan Devi’s first movie with Deepa Mehta, Brother, Sister. During the screening, Mehta would present awards to the actors, including Anand Patwardhan. The documentary would end with a reenactment of the actual shooting of the movie starring Deepa Mehta, filmmaker and actor Veerendra Saxena, and actresses Mandakini and Aliya Bandukwala. Finally, there would be a dance ceremony with live performances and photographs of Phoolan Devi’s life.
Indians don’t tolerate injustice. Phoolan Devi’s story is a tale of injustice. Indias problem, says the government is injustice. It is not a battle between good and evil, it is not a tale of a football game. The fight for justice is a fight for liberty and freedom, for human rights and democracy. All the people of the world must unite to fight for human rights, Phoolan Devi’s daughter Jyoti Hirway told the audience at the actual screening of the movie that was dedicated to her.
Hence, On April 9, 1999, the Censor Board granted the film an A certificate, putting it among the first Indian movies to be accorded such an honour. It was released on 3 August 1999. In the opening scenes, the camera follows the bandit on horseback as he gallops across a meadow, drawing his dark revolver. The night he enters the woman’s cottage is cold and misty.
The humour in the movie reflects the “pithy pranks and rhymes” (p. 190) with which Bandit Queen is sprinkled. “Flirt with me, or I may be mistaken for someone else.” “I am a sick woman who bears only one man’s child.” Or the “lair so sweetly laid for its little bird.” But Pashu says all of this adds to the comedy. Bandit Queen is like its title – a film that comes from the Indian heart.
