Goodie Mob Soul Food Full Album Zip Mega
so many great albums, but this one is such a dynamic album that i’ve had it on repeat for years. it has a very comfortable arrangement, going in and coming out. its like having the right friends, the right moment, and everything falling into place.
songs like ‘nice & smooth’ and ‘stand strong’ have been staples in the miami & new york dance scenes for years now. these two producers have been working together for a while and this album is a reflection of that artistic and commercial partnership. while there’s no shortage of prominent names here (including beats by el-p & rjd2), the album has a clever production that elevates each track.
i also love how the music, though it sounds gangsta, has a refined production, clear with well-placed effects. its also interesting how the record compresses and distills the abundant styles of sample-based music into a cohesive style, while also sprinkling the album with a bit of bossanova and other influences. el-p, du$ta, kenny beats, evidence & rjd2 add up to a great record that both new york and miami fans will love. the hot boy (ft. madlib, guilty simpson, mr. porter, caleborate, and el-p)
whenever they’re not busy with other projects fat joe decides to unleash his batty lyrical prowess in drag to deliver the most hilarious rhymes of his whole career. on this particular track he manages to tackle both the politics of leadership and a very fitting criticism of the current healthcare crisis in a cheeky and funny manner. unbelievable.
diddy & shoe gant (with wyclef jean) recorded the original french version of the song with it was titled god bless america (s/t 1993). plenty of references to both the rivalries of 2 pac and public enemy and the former us-vietnam conflict. if you are a fan of the subject, i recommend the album to you.
you know one of the things i think about soul food, i think one of the things thats most important about it is that it captures the feeling of a specific era, whereas other records, records that came out around the time we did were really about trying to, every day is like a party, everyday is like a party, i think thats what that record captures, being out in the club having a good time. having a good time with friends and other things, and thats what we wanted to do.
im not trying to promote any group or anything, im just saying thats what that record felt like to us. its beyond classic, its from our house and nobody sounds like us, so that st takes us back to a time before there was radio stations, before there was the internet. its the sound of atlanta back in the day. you hear it in atlanta, but you dont hear it anywhere else.
that st gets me up. it makes me feel good, it does. but i think ill probably have to pull it out of my record collection to enjoy it. but i still do, i think its classic. i think its good that stuff is being discovered, so that st stays fresh. because people dont remember, unless it was on mtv or something, they dont remember if they heard it before. they only remember if they heard it after. so if they hear it now, theyre like, oh, thats outkast or something, but if it was in a certain radio station or on the rap grapevine or something, theyll remember it. thats the whole reason im saying this record is so good, because it ill stay with you. its a good bottle of wine.
outkast of course were the cornerstone of what was happening, but the rest of the album, from big bois surrealistic tales of the mixtape underground, to cee-lo vocals masking his own songwriting, to the groups astonishing blend of rap and singing, to how the album came together at all: the gipps and t-mos magical rhythm section, and organized noizes own knack for turning out funky party records in double digits, it was all part of the process of building a great southern rap group. in the beginning, cee-lo mentioned that the guys were just imitating the music of other artists they loved, like boyz ii men, michael jackson, and the blues brothers. but it was outkast, of course, that served as the ultimate touchstone, as goodie mob dove from northern r&b into soul music and suburban, southern funk, always always returning to outkasts mystifying ability to combine all these varied sounds into a single harmony.
