theres a lot of talk here of kurapika being the most powerful and the strongest of the hunter x hunter characters. not true. though i believe he was the most powerful, he was also the most flawed. his strength depended on his own virtues, and he was hindered by his weakness. i think it will be kurapika who serves as the hardest-hearted character to overcome in the series, and the films, as well as the other hunter x hunter series. here, the film is the most favorable of the hunter x hunter films in its treatment of kurapika. i think its just because its kurapika who was the most sympathetic character of the bunch, and the movies, thus far, have had the most sympathy for characters with problems. the issue of kurapika and his inner darkness is probably more comprehensively dealt with here than anywhere else. theres a whole section where gon finds out kurapika has a homicidal fantasy that he keeps hidden, a fantasy that hes sharing with killua. his thoughts and feelings are poured out on a character in a way theyre never poured out on gon before. its here that we see the depth of his good nature and his ability to make friends, and the weakness of his good heart is exposed as well. its the moment when theres real pain in kurapikas face as he realizes the monster he really is, and the realization comes from a place that hes never really fully embraced gon, or even himself. its one of the most memorable moments of the series to date.

Theres something beautifully hopeless about the ending of these movies. Given what we saw of the Phantom in the comics, this state of affairs might be familiar to fans of the series. It seems so anomalous and unlikely for the second movie in a row to play this character off as the good guy (though I suppose he never actually was the good guy), but it also brings home something even more profound – the sheer magnitude of the friends the Kamina. Yamcha, Kurapika and Nobunaga – they were damned good guys, but they werent even good enough for them. The only one of the three who deserves to live is the one who had enough cruelty in him to kill their friends and survive the experience. : : : : (Only because they needed a focus point for the main story arc. The original story arc was huge and likely to take up a whole entire volume of Shonen Jump. I think back on how many times I heard how the next arc was the last arc, and how the ending of each was so intensely satisfying (for me at least). The fact that this time the ending is perfectly natural and fitting, with no sudden revelation, makes it feel more bittersweet. It was an ending we deserved.
This was the first time we’ve seen Killua and Gons interaction with such a young girl, and its one of the more touching moments of the series. I’d have liked to have seen more of this, and it’s still so nice to see them together again. This episode feels more like a real flashback, and the other films dont have the time to really dedicate to this type of thing. It also seems to help that Retz is this all mighty evil masterminds who has lived for over 30 years and is a good 20 years older than these kids. Gon and Killua, on the other hand, are a couple of kids in their own right. Theres a real reluctance to deviate from the norm in Phantom Rouge, even when Gon does find himself in a unique situation with a girl of her age. But I really enjoyed the way this film handled the old man and the young boy, and this is very much a story about a male child and female child. This would probably have come off as wrong in a previous series, but because its the first time theyre really set in this type of environment, its handled really well. Also, I’m really glad to see that its not mutually exclusive to have female characters acting in a more ‘shounen’ style.
