South Florida Fashion Academy Celebrates Black History Month in Lauderdale Lakes
Black History Month is an annually observed holiday throughout the entire month of February in the United States celebrating and remembering important Black icons, figures, people and events in African-American history. It is an official recognition from the federal U.S. government as well as local cities across America. This year’s Black History Month marks the 100th year anniversary and students as well as staff are excited to celebrate and remember the remarkable and brave Black Americans that have come before them over the last 250 years in America.
South Florida Fashion Academy (SF/FA) & Innovative Heights Preparatory Academy (IHPA) is estatic to have its students and staff participate in the Black Excellence Parade & Festival in the City of Lauderdale Lakes in the first week of February on Saturday, February 7th, 2026 to commemorate Black History Month with the local community. This signature community celebration will honor and celebrate Black culture, history, creativity, and achievement.

In addition to participating in this year’s Black Excellence Parade & Festival, SF/FA and IHPA will also dedicate a portion of various class sessions to learning about and celebrating significant Black icons and activists that have allowed African-Americans to achieve equality and justice in the U.S.
From W.E.B. Du Bois, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Jr., Congressman John Lewis, Malcom X, Huey P. Newton, James Baldwin, Harry Belafonte, Nina Simone, Thurgood Marshall, Ruby Bridges, Spike Lee, President Barack Obama, Michelle Obama and hundreds of other American figures who exemplify true Black American Excellence.
We believe that Black history is important and essential to learn about all year long. From the first Black teacher to leading Black fashion designers, activists (past and present) and important Black women from history is a key part of our core curriculum because it is a core part of American history.
