Black-Owned Fashion & Beauty School For Middle & High School Students, South Florida Fashion Academy, Expands Fashion Design program With New Sustainable Fashion Design CurriculumSouth Flor

South Florida Fashion Academy is pleased to announce it is expanding its fashion design program for middle and high school students to include a new sustainable fashion curriculum for the 2024-2025 school year.

As students gear up for Spring Break 2025, the academy’s program director and founder, Taj McGill, says she is excited to launch a new sustainable fashion design curriculum that educates students about fast fashion, the circular economy and upcycled fashion. “At SF/FA, we want to provide our students with the tools and resources necessary to build a successful career in the fashion industry that equally minimizes pollution and promotes sustainability. Our new sustainable fashion design curriculum will enable students to transform the industry and develop skills, tactics and strategies that support sustainability, social equity, and ethical practices within the fashion world,” McGill stated.

In addition, SF/FA’s new sustainable fashion curriculum will serve as an introduction for young, talented students about the unsustainable problems facing the fashion industry and how upcycling fashion alternatives and opportunities can support change. “Students will get an insightful introduction to viable sustainable fashion practices and the growing trend towards sustainable and ethically designed clothing. This evolution in the fashion industry is one we believe should be embraced in children at an early age. We’re in support of  working with our students to create a greener planet now and in the future. Plus, it can help students explore and earn a job in an expanding and evolving fashion job market. At SF/FA, we’re adamant about giving our students an extra edge in the competitive global world of fashion and that’s exactly what this new sustainable fashion course will do,” McGill continued.

This news comes on the heels of SF/FA partnering with St. Thomas University in an effort to provide SF/FA high school students access to a new collegiate fashion design dual-enrollment program that allows them to learn from STU fashion design professors and earn college credits. “We’re really excited to continue expanding and improving our fashion design program through strategic partnerships. We have several new partnerships and educational programs and offerings that are launching this school year,” McGill stated.

According to the National Institute of Health, 92 million tons of clothing end up in landfills each year, which is equivalent to a dump truck full of clothing being sent to a landfill every second. In the United States, this amounts to 11.3 million tons of textile waste, or 81.5 pounds per person per year. SF/FA is aiming to help educate students and provide them the tools and resources to reverse this global crisis while also becoming competitive in an ever-changing fashion industry. “We want to teach our bright, young, creative students early in life about what dilemmas the fashion industry faces when it comes to waste and how they can personally take action to make positive change. In fact, we will be working with our students during this new school year to teach them about the latest develop their own upcycle, sustainable fashion collections
