The second research question explores how this talk about what a profession of journalism is and what it is not, ultimately affects the Vietnamese knowledge about journalists and journalists’ practices. The study used a cultural approach (cf. Shaw 1999 ), which invites the participants to describe in their own words the social, cultural, religious, economic, and legal values and practices in the Vietnam, and how this affects the Vietnamese journalist. Through an examination of these values, it is possible to see how the Vietnamese view a profession of journalism and thus how they understand it, and how their understandings have been negotiated into the media aid projects. To what extent did the Swedish-Vietnamese project become a dialogue about what a profession of journalism is and not?
Research question 3 explores how the Vietnam journalists experienced the Swedish-Vietnamese media aid project. The study used an interview approach that encouraged the participants to narrate how they experienced the Swedish-Vietnam media aid project. By asking the participants to talk about their experiences of the Swedish-Vietnam media aid project, it is possible to get a sense of how the project was perceived by the Vietnamese. Furthermore, it is possible to understand to what extent the project became a dialogue of a profession of journalism, or not?
The goal of this paper is to explore the concepts of media ideology and media pedagogy as they are exemplified in the Swedish media aid projects with Vietnam from 1993 to 2007. Media pedagogy relates to how teachers share and transmit knowledge about media practices in cultural contexts. While media ideology refers to ideas about what constitutes media culture and offers valuable insight, lessons and recommendations about the media. However, as a framework for this study, media ideology has also been previously used to analyze the role of cultural values in the transfer of knowledge about media practices to audiences outside media institutions (Josephi 2010). I take this two way perspective and also use insights from deconstructionist and post-colonial criticism to unpack the project strategies of the Swedish media aid projects with Vietnam.
the old-fashioned journalistic lifestyle in sweden and the new media technologies in vietnam provide us with a setting for an in-depth investigation into journalism, as it creates a problem of translation into another cultural context. since the journalists were exposed to a different tradition of journalism, the learning experiences of the journalists in vietnam became the focus of the study. the settings of the various interviews that were conducted during the project in 1993-2007, characterized by a journalist’s lifestyle, exposed new meanings that were not familiar to the swedish interviewees. this new knowledge was the result of both the experience and the training. how the vietnamese journalists reacted and questioned the trainer’s statements and experiences was also a focus of the interviews. in this way, the theoretical aim of the study was to identify how the swedish agency tried to negotiate its own journalistic ideology into a cultural setting characterized by a contrasting ideology and history. the study also examined the significance of journalistic knowledge transfer in relation to the in-country expertise and other collaborative partners during the development of a national media system and how this affects the perspective on a country’s media development.
